Michael Warner II's demostration public service announcement

The audio file is in MP3 format. Many programs can play MP3. If you do not have such a program, then you could use VLC Media Player. I only recommend this program because it will also play other files on my website, and it will run on many types of computers. Click here to download VLC Media Player.

About the file

This is the only telecommunications project I was able to bring a copy home from community college. It was the final project for my second audio class, which the students finally got to save a whole project to the computers. We each made our own 30 second public service announcement for anything we want.

Political disclaimer

I made the recording in 2000. This was the time between the Cold War and 9-11. I need to apologize for incorrectly writing that Taiwan had its first democratic elections in 2000. Taiwan started its democratic reforms in the early 1990's, and had the first democratic elections in 1992. But still, this was too long to wait for freedom, especially for the Chinese bastion of freedom against the mainland communists. Capitalism by itself is not freedom. Iraq’s Suddam Hussein was one of the United State’s concerns ever since the Persian Gulf War, but it aided and abetted him in the past to suppress Muslim Fundamentalism, while Christian Fundamentalism was gaining power in the United States. I just read a book on how the CIA aided in torturing the indigenous Guatemalans to suppress the socialist movements of starving plantation workers. And all this brings me back to remembering the Iran-Contra scandal. This whole foreign policy thing stinks like a big mass of poop. I wanted it changed before the big retaliation strikes would come that I sensed for years may come from any number of peoples.

How I made the file

I made my recording with Avid Pro Tools. A device with digital sound effects and a microphone was plugged into the computer. I first recorded my speech into the Pro Tools via microphone. I adjust my recorded speech to set it to the set level (normalize to 0 dB). I made sure I fit to 30 seconds, which is the desired time length. I then used Pro Tools’ smart song feature to add an upbeat song to fit under my call to action portion of my speech. I say “fit under”, because I then lower the song to half the volume of my voice (-3db), so to have my speech clearly heard with it in the background. Calibrate the input from the sound effects device to be -3db to be just like the song. I then add sound effects from the sound effect device. I dragged my boom box to school to record the final project from the computer to my cassette tape. I then saved at home to my computer.
